The Dementia Simulation Experience is an educational tool designed to help students understand and empathize with the challenges faced by individuals living with dementia. It uses simulation equipment to replicate the sensory and cognitive impairments associated with dementia, allowing students to experience and better grasp the daily difficulties encountered by those affected. How many students can participate in a simulation at the same time? Ten students can experience the dementia simulation at one time. However, the curriculum includes 10 dementia scenarios for students to role-play, allowing 20-30 students to participate in a scenario at once. They can then rotate through the scenario roles, allowing each students to play both the dementia patient and caregiver. What does the simulation include? The Dementia Simulation Experience includes simulation glasses, MP3 player and headphones, and other sensory devices that simulate the effects of dementia, such as impaired vision, hearing loss, and cognitive disorientation. It also comes with a comprehensive curriculum that includes lesson plans, activities, and discussion guides to enhance the learning experience. How can this simulation be used in the classroom? The simulation can be integrated into various subjects such as health science classes, nursing programs, social work courses, Family and Consumer Sciences, geriatrics and elder Care, and more. It can be used to foster discussions on patient care, the importance of empathy in healthcare, and the impact of dementia on families. Can the simulation be adapted for different educational levels? Yes, the simulation can be adapted for various educational levels. Teachers can adjust the complexity of the discussions and the depth of the curriculum to suit the students’ age and knowledge level.
