As a faculty member in health professions education, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a variety of simulation tools, and the RealityWorks Geriatric Nursing Manikin stands out as a solid, practical choice—especially for nurse aide training programs. Pros: Modular and Realistic Design: The ease of changing out body parts is a major plus. The manikin includes realistic-looking pressure wounds, a removable breastplate, and detailed facial features that enhance the realism of clinical scenarios. Mobility and Range of Motion: It’s lightweight and easy to move, which is helpful in a classroom setting. The range of motion is thoughtfully limited to reflect the physical limitations of many elderly patients, adding to the authenticity. Educational Value: The manikin aligns well with state nurse aide skill requirements, particularly with the default female genitalia setup, which covers most of the required procedures. Cons: Hardware Durability: A recurring issue is that many of the bolts tend to come loose with regular use. I’ve had to apply Locktite to keep them secure, and a few bolts have been lost and needed replacement. Genitalia Swapping Difficulty: Changing out the genitalia is cumbersome, so I’ve opted to leave the female genitalia in place for simplicity and relevance to most training scenarios. Limited Sitting Functionality: Unlike some other brands, this manikin doesn’t sit up well on its own. It lacks the structural support to maintain a seated position on the side of the bed, which limits its use in certain training exercises. Overall Impression: Despite a few mechanical drawbacks, the RealityWorks Geriatric Nursing Manikin offers excellent value for its price. It’s a highly recommended tool for any nursing or nurse aide program looking to provide realistic, hands-on geriatric care training.
